, March 03, 2009

SYSGO, leading supplier of software solutions for the world’s most demanding safety and security applications, announces the release of PikeOS 3.0, its powerful and efficient safe and secure virtualization RTOS platform. This version provides a major revision of CODEO, the Eclipse™ based development environment, support of new architectures, DO-178B safety certifiability, and many other improvements.

PikeOS is continuing its progression within industry sectors developing applications demanding more and more flexibility and openness while still requiring the highest level of reliability and predictability. Recent successes in the avionics industry, in particular for the future AIRBUS A350WB aircraft, confirmed the superiority of PikeOS in providing an ideal combination of maximum flexibility with safety- and security-critical compliancy.

Not just another RTOS
PikeOS offers a platform of the future because it is a powerful and efficient paravirtualization real-time operating system based on a separation microkernel. The unique PikeOS virtualization concept satisfies the new generation of safety-critical requirements exemplified by Integrated Modular Avionics, security requirements such as MILS, and supports the more general functionality of software virtualization. PikeOS allows multiple “Personalities” (Guest OS and Runtime Environments) to run concurrently.

“PikeOS’ market adoption has been extremely fast, as business related to this product line now represents 62% of total revenue”, said Jacques Brygier, VP Marketing. “With the 3.0 version we go one step further in satisfying our customers’ expectations. This major version is the first release of a new generation of our safe and secure virtualization platform. With 3.0, PikeOS is ready to address the new challenges of multi-core support, combined certification according to both safety and security standards, and safety-critical certified add-ons such as file systems and IP stacks.”

PikeOS is currently the reference platform in major European projects. Some of these projects include trusted computing (TECOM), platform independent software development interface for complex multicore systems (JEOPARD), evaluation and validation of new flight systems avionics (SCARLETT), architecture rapid design, prototyping and code generation of complex embedded systems (INTERESTED), and integrated Modular Electronics (IME) platform providing secure distribution and execution on virtual machines to avionics applications (DIANA). In addition, SYSGO has been involved for 3 years in the VerisoftXT project where its main activity is to conduct a formal verification of its MILS based PikeOS microkernel, a mandatory requirement for Common Criteria’s EAL 7.

The new 3.0 version of PikeOS includes a range of existing and new functionality that is unique on the market today, featuring:

  • Hard real-time combined with paravirtualization
  • MILS architecture compliancy
  • Increased modularity of the separation microkernel - NEW
  • Hardware independent partitioning model
  • Advanced scheduling & timing (scheduling schemes can be changed on the fly)
  • Tickerless timing support
  • Optimized memory footprint generation
  • ARM architecture support - NEW
  • PowerPC e500 core architecture support - NEW
  • Built-in Health Monitoring feature
  • POSIX PSE-51 and PSE-52 optimized support for C/C++ applications - NEW
  • CODEO 3.0 version - NEW
  • Certifiable to safety-critical standards (DO-178B, IEC 61508, and EN 50128)
  • Large range of available Personalities (from ARINC-563 to full-user mode Linux)
  • Quota scheduling for POSIX applications - NEW

PikeOS 3.0 includes CODEO 3.0, the most recent release of the Eclipse based integrated development environment from SYSGO that provides guided configuration, remote debugging (often down to the hardware instruction level), target monitoring, remote application deployment, and timing analyses in addition to standard application development features such as compilers and assemblers.

Availability
PikeOS 3.0 is available in March 2009. The families of supported processors today are the x86, PowerPC, MIPS, and ARM. The supported personalities include PikeOS Native, ARINC-653, Linux, POSIX and OSEK, as well as personalities involving partners or third-parties like Java, Ada, µITRON, CoDeSys®, FidelityVCF™, and potentially any commercial or proprietary RTOS.
