SYSGO at embedded world: Certified Safety and Security for IIoT, Automotive and Avionics

SYSGO will demonstrate various applications of its real-time operating system PikeOS at the embedded world 2019 trade show and conference, held from February 26 to 28 in Nuremberg, Germany. The operating system, which is the only one with a separation kernel certified to Common Criteria EAL 3+, will be demonstrated in various systems for the avionics, automotive and industrial (IIoT) industries. By strictly separating applications from each other, PikeOS ensures both functional safety and IT security, as well as hosting critical and non-critical applications on the same multicore platform.

PikeOS Hypervisor certified according to Common Criteria

SYSGO's PikeOS hypervisor has been certified according to Common Criteria EAL 3+. The subject of certification by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is the separation kernel in PikeOS, which ensures a strict separation of applications running on the same hardware through spatial and temporal partitioning.Such a separation is required above all in security-critical systems and is generally mandatory for the certification of the overall system. The certification by the BSI was carried out for the PikeOS Separation Kernel Version 4.2.2 (build number s5400) for the platforms X86_64, ARMv7 and ARMv8.

Born for virtualization

Certifying software is a complex process that includes to review software design, coding, validation and verification. Certification costs are very much related to the number of lines of code and the modularity of the software. Certification of monolithic software is complex and expensive. More promising is the use of a modular platform. That's where we started our considerations when we designed PikeOS Safe & Secure Virtualization as an operating system to be used in safety- and security-critical environments. As the most flexible and smallest platform we chose a micro kernel approach for PikeOS. Including additional system software it comprises less than 10K lines of code in total. The micro kernel is equipped with a modular Architecture and Platform Support Packages (ASP and PSP). The system software allows to build multiple partitions for divers OSs, APIs, and RTE. As a result PikeOS has become a small and modular platform - perfect for certification.
