Compliance of the Common Criteria Evaluation with the RTCA DO-356A Standard

With the increasing connectivity of aircrafts, Security becomes an important topic for Avionics. As a consequence, two committees have started their work on airworthiness Security:
The EUROCAE working group WG-72 in Europe and the RTCA committee SC-216 in the US. In 2018, both groups have released their harmonized document DO-356A/ED-203A, which is a practical guide for the implementation of Security within airborne electronic systems.

The title of this standard is "Airworthiness Security Methods and Considerations". The guidance prescribed by the document is not mandated by law, but represents the consensus of the Aviation community and covers the protection of an aircraft from intentional unauthorized electronic interaction.

The standard discusses regulatory aspects, describes the approach of risk analysis and lists the objectives necessary to assure that Security measures perform as intended. The latter is known as Security assurance. This webcast will discuss the relevant Security assurance objectives and show how the DO-356A allows to build a bridge to a regulatory framework serving the IT sector: The Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (CC).

As the CC were not developed for Airborne systems, there is no complete mapping from the DO-356A to the CC. The webcast shows how related classes of the CC can be reused and a significant portion of tedious rework for already existing and certified software packages can be avoided.
