Honeywell Excel-Web now with Linux

Honeywell is expanding its building automation solutions with a Linux-based controller. Honeywell commissioned the Mainz-based software house SYSGO to create the system software for the new member of the EXCEL 5000 OPEN family. The core of the hardware platform is based on a PowerPC CPU from Motorola, for which SYSGO developed the board support package, the drivers for the required peripherals and a boot loader. The application software is created in-house by Honeywell.

"By entrusting SYSGO with the Linux porting to our hardware platform, we have incorporated the expertise of this professional company into the product development and have been able to focus more on the further development of our application," explains Hans-Werner Koch, responsible for the development "Building Automation Europe" at Honeywell. "The wide availability of software protocols under Linux has enabled many new features for our building control."

When selecting a partner, the long-term nature of the cooperation was a key criterion for Honeywell. SYSGO therefore maintains the new Board Support Package for Motorola PPC 855T in the ELinOS embedded Linux development environment. This makes this hardware platform available for the development of embedded applications under Linux.

The EXCEL 5000 OPEN system, which is used by Honeywell worldwide in building automation, is developed and produced at the Schönaich site near Stuttgart. In addition, 500 employees in Schönaich develop and manufacture a wide range of analogue and digital heating and ventilation controllers, the programmable electronic thermostatic valve "Raumtronic", the house management system "Hometronic" as well as heating mixers and drives.
