SYSGO's Portable AFDX achieves DO-178B Level C certification for Boeing 787 Dreamliner

SYSGO, leading supplier of software solutions for the most demanding safety and security applications, today announced that their first implementation of genuine software based AFDX (ARINC 664) solution has received formal approval by FAA for DO-178B Level C certification. This implementation is part of equipment to be used on Boeing 787 aircraft.

This important milestone is the result of 2 years of effort with Vibro-Meter and other major avionics industrial players. Details of the project cannot be disclosed at this time, but this achievement can be considered as the first of several integrations which are currently at different stages of implementation.

“Coming with a software-based implementation of AFDX could have been seen as very challenging, “ said Dider Abel, Project Leader at Vibro-Meter SA. “We were confident however in the ability of our technical staff to take up this challenge, and we chose SYSGO as our key partner because of their experience in DO-178B certification and real time networking. This achievement is definitely the result of a very good partnership over 2 years and confirms our opinion about SYSGO’s technical excellence.”

The software implementation of AFDX offers design possibilities that hardware solutions can not provide. Software AFDX is portable, more flexible and much more affordable compared to the currently used ASICs. Portable AFDX consists of the AFDX Node implementation and the very small footprint host driver. ICMP and SNMP run on the AFDX Node, which eliminates the need for server applications on the host. The AFDX Node configuration is based on an XML formal which allows to use standard tools for configuration editing and also eases the automated conversion of existing AFDX configurations. SYSGO's software AFDX avoids the high design risks and extensive development costs of a hardware solution and provides the opportunity to incorporate customer ideas and be ready for future challenges.

Host drivers are available for PikeOS, Linux and other COTS real-time operating systems.

About AFDX

"Avionic Full-Duplex Switched Ethernet" (AFDX/ARINC-664) is a specification of a deterministic aircraft data network bus system for public (but not only) avionic transportation. The network is based on standard 802.3 Ethernet technology components to reduce the overall costs for the aircraft network. AFDX extends the standard Ethernet by adding Quality-of-Service (QoS) and deterministic behavior with a guaranteed dedicated bandwidth.
