Siemens chooses PikeOS Hypervisor for Electric Cars

Siemens has chosen the PikeOS Hypervisor for its new electronics and software platform for electric cars. As seen in aviation technology, standardized hardware and software modules provide the basis for a unified computing architecture that can replace function-specific controller modules (ECUs). The PikeOS Hypervisor serves as the backbone of the software architecture. As a virtualization platform with hard real-time characteristics, PikeOS enables a predefined set of functions according to the plug-and-play principle. The new platform provides plenty of scope for individual product bundling. The first customer to make use of these advantages is Deutsche Post subsidiary StreetScooter from Aachen.


Electronics Platform for Electric Cars

Siemens CT NTF RACE is developing the innovative electronic architecture for electric cars made by StreetScooter – a 100-percent subsidiary of Deutsche Post, which produces electric vehicles for delivery on behalf of its parent company, as well as for other customers. The unified platform consists of standardized hardware and the PikeOS Hypervisor, which enables an individual set of software functions.

“Individualisation is an important trend in automobile production,” explains Dr. Christian Buckl, Software Development Manager at Siemens CT NTF RACE. “PikeOS, certifiable according to the automotive electronics safety standard ISO 26262, is the ideal solution for us. Using the Hypervisor allows us to be very flexible in the functional composition of our platform. We enable our customers to quickly and efficiently implement innovative functions via software, even in the after sales market, as well as to meet the highest safety requirements.” 


PikeOS Hypervisor in the Electric Car

The PikeOS Hypervisor is used in a number of different domains with safety requirements, and is certified in accordance with the required safety standards for aerospace, rail, automotive and industrial automation. Its strict partitioning allows individual and secure integration of various software functions in the electric car, ranging from infotainment to safety-critical assistance systems. Siemens is preparing an electronics platform using the PikeOS Hypervisor that can be quickly, inexpensively and reliably extended and is prepared for autonomous driving and integration into an intelligent transport infrastructure.


RACE Research Project as an Incubator

As part of the RACE (Reliable Automation and Control Environment) research project, Siemens' central research has chosen the PikeOS Hypervisor as a software platform to significantly simplify the complex electronic architecture in the car, which requires a high degree of safety. In accordance with the fly-by-wire principle in aviation, the number and complexity of control units, including wiring, should be significantly reduced and simple, fast and convenient integration of new driving functions should be realized by software that meets high safety and reliability standards (ISO 26262). The RACE research project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics, and completed at the end of 2014. 


PikeOS Hypervisor

PikeOS is a hypervisor especially made for embedded systems. With real-time, virtualization and partitioning, it provides all the features needed to build today’s multi-functional and high-integrated devices. Its security architecture creates a foundation for critical systems allowing official approval by the authorities and certification according to international functional safety standards. PikeOS is the only European software platform for smart devices in the Internet-of-Things.
