Certified Virtualization and AFDX® on Freescale's Dual-Core PowerQUICC III

SYSGO, leading supplier of software solutions for the most demanding safety and security applications, today announced the porting of their FAA pre-approved implementation of genuine software based AFDX® to Freescale's Dual-Core PowerQUICC III.

SYSGO has achieved a major step forward in its effort to provide the mission- and safety-critical market with innovative and field-proven software solutions. Industries like aerospace and defense, industrial automation or transportation are increasingly facing both technical and economical challenges. Growing functionality and performance cannot be traded for safety and security on the one hand, and time-to-market and deployment costs on the other. Currently developed for avionics applications but easily adaptable to other industry sectors, the unique SYSGO offering is based on:

  • DO-178B certified PikeOS, the first implementation of the SSV (Safe and Secure Virtualization) concept
  • DO-178B certified Portable AFDX®, the first software based AFDX® certifiable implementation
  • PowerQUICC III MPC8572E, the next-generation dual-core integrated communication processor

“We see a growing interest for our software based implementation of AFDX®, “said Michael Tiedemann, CEO of SYSGO. “The combination with our DO-178B certifiable and SMP compliant operating system PikeOS and the efficient dual-core PowerQUICC III hardware platform makes it even more attractive. We are delighted to see that a growing number of major companies make the choice of SYSGO solutions when it comes to address in parallel performance and cost reduction for safety- and security-critical systems.”

Freescale’s high-performance MPC8572 PowerQUICC™ III integrated communications processor is designed to provide solutions for symmetrical and asymmetrical multi-core systems. Based on the scalable e500 processor and system-on-chip (SoC) platform, the device delivers dual-core gigahertz plus processing performance with advanced content processing and security features.

The combined solution can be used in different cases requiring the use a dual core device for higher performance with symmetric multiprocessor (SMP). Those cases include: to collapse two non-SMP operation systems (either homogenous or heterogeneous) onto one device; for split control and data plane applications; for adding services/applications on Linux next to an existing OS; for later in-field upgrade to higher performance by turning on the second core; for in-field “hot swap” OS upgrade by loading new OS to second core before putting first core with old OS into sleep mode.

Availability

The combined solution of Portable AFDX® and PikeOS 3.0 on PowerQUICC III MPC8572E will be available in November 2009.

More on AFDX

"Avionic Full-Duplex Switched Ethernet" (AFDX®/ARINC-664) is a specification of a deterministic aircraft data network bus system for public (but not only) avionic transportation. The network is based on standard 802.3 Ethernet technology components to reduce the overall costs for the aircraft network. AFDX® extends the standard Ethernet by adding Quality of Service (QoS) and deterministic behavior with a guaranteed dedicated bandwidth. SYSGO’s software implementation of AFDX® offers design possibilities that hardware solutions cannot provide. Software AFDX® is portable, more flexible and much more affordable compared to the currently used ASICs. Portable AFDX® consists of the AFDX® Node implementation and the very small footprint host driver. SYSGO´s Portable AFDX® avoids the high design risks and extensive development costs of a hardware solution and provides the opportunity for customers to adapt it for their specific needs. In addition to PikeOS, other host drivers are available like Linux and other major COTS Real Time Operating Systems.

More on PikeOS

PikeOS is an innovative product, providing an embedded systems platform where multiple virtual machines can run simultaneously in a secure environment. The Safe and Secure Virtualization (SSV) technology allows multiple operating system APIs, called “Guest OS”, to run concurrently on one machine, e.g. an ARINC-653 application together with Linux. The PikeOS microkernel architecture allows it to be used in cost sensitive, resource constrained devices as well as large, complex systems. The simplicity and compactness of the PikeOS design results in real-time performance that competes head-to-head with conventional proprietary RTOS solutions. PikeOS is certifiable to safety standards like DO-178B, IEC 61508 or EN 50128, and is also MILS compliant.
